Simple Saving Savvy Returns

Life with God is never dull. Because every day He will take us to greater heights. He’ll allow circumstances into our lives that leave our weaknesses glaring in our faces. He’ll reveal our idols and test us beyond our endurance. All of this to teach us to walk in tune with His voice and let Him be our everything.

Lately, He’s been peeling back lots of layers in this girl’s life, beginning back in July when I said goodbye to Simple Saving Savvy for what I thought would be forever.

At that time, I shared with you…

It has become quite apparent to me that I simply do not have the time to maintain Simple Saving Savvy any longer. There is simply no way I can keep up the pace and creativity, still save money for my family and minister to my family.

And to be quite honest, I was so busy pursuing my vision instead of God’s, that I simply became burned out.

After praying about it for the past couple of months, I do not feel like God is saying stop altogether, but rather to go a different direction – the direction He had in mind all along, and that is to share my own journey – not try to be all things to all people in the money saving department.

Writing that post felt like having my heart ripped out of my chest. Simple Saving Savvy was my baby, my heart, but it was more than that. It had taken the place of God in my life. It had become an idol. And as idols always do, it took over my life, giving nothing back in return.

I found my worth and satisfaction in updating the blog, so I lived for it. I forsook my quiet time with God. I neglected my home and family. I became competitive with other frugal bloggers whose mission was completely different from the one God had given me. I wasn’t practicing “faithful stewardship through intentional living.”

I had become a hypocrite.

I truly believe God was testing me when He put it in my heart to walk away from Simple Saving Savvy. To see which I would choose: Him or it. He hadn’t removed the dream from my heart, but simply asked me to choose Him over the dream and then trust Him with the dream.

I am so glad I chose best over good.

God has shown me alot of things over the past several months:

  1. I am not a homemaking blogger and I am not a money saving blogger. I am a stewardship blogger. I have no desire to write about all things homemaking or to post about scoring every sweet deal. I simply want to share how God is leading me to practice wise stewardship of time, money and creativity in my home.
  2. I need accountability. Believe it or not, posting grocery deals and coupons and menu plans for you, holds me accountable to spending my household budget wisely. I have barely used a coupon since August and menu planning has been haphazard. My grocery bill has grown. Yikes!
  3. God has not called us to homeschool, therefore I am blessed with lots of uninterrupted time during the week. With discipline and balance, there is no reason why I cannot maintain my home and a blog, and supplement our income a little as well.
  4. I crave balance. I crave productivity. I was burnt out on Simple Saving Savvy because I had lost both, because I had given myself over to an idol.
  5. I was trying to compete with every other money saving blogger to make everyone happy, but what I discovered is that most SSS readers love it because it ISN’T all that.

So I am happy to tell you beginning February 1, Simple Saving Savvy will be full speed ahead.

Over the month of January, I’ll be posting here and there, but mostly I’ll be working behind the scenes to streamline and become more organized. And Maria will be working to give SSS a fresh, new look.

I will no longer blog at Homemaking Unplugged, and will be discontinuing emailed updates. So be sure and sign up for Simple Saving Savvy emailed updates!

Nix Holiday Stress: Time-saving Frugal Gift Giving

Share This Post :
Nix Holiday Stress: Time Saving, Frugal Gift GivingPhoto Credit: asenat29

The last thing the holiday season should be is stressful, but let’s face it, most times it’s just that, stress-FULL. This series will give you tips to NIX that stress right out of your celebration. We’ll talk about how to lighten your load in areas like gift-giving, entertaining, holiday travel and your Christmas budget. Not necessarily in that order.

I love shopping. I love giving gifts. The two go hand in hand but this can also cause things to “get out of hand” rather quickly in the areas of time and money. Here are my top three tips for saving both while still giving great gifts!

Buy all year.

I know it’s a little late in the year for this one, but it’s my number one tip for saving both time and money. I keep an eye out all year for items I can gift later. The key to making this worthwhile is to either buy only with a specific person in mind or buy only classic, timeless items that most anyone would enjoy. I love shopping after Christmas clearance sales with next year in mind.

You can also use this tactic to save on gift giving year round.

Shop During the Week.

Shop during the week.Preferably towards the first of the week, and more preferably during the day and without children. At these times, the stores are far less crowded, merchandise is usually restocked AND the staff is usually more helpful. This way you can browse, price compare and receive customer service in a relaxed atmosphere. You’ll be less likely to make impulse purchases.

Shop Online.

This is my favorite way to save time and money. With all the online competition nowadays, you’ll find great deals online, plus you’ll be able to compare prices, hunt for coupon codes and snag free shipping. All while sitting in your pjs and sipping a latte.

Savings.com is a great place to find the latest promotions and coupon codes.

Consider gift cards.

I don’t happen to be one of those people who think gift cards are impersonal. In fact, I prefer gift cards. They allow me to shop (which is what I love to do most) and get exactly what I like (without spending time in return lines). Not to mention, they can save the gift giver money! Many retailers offer promotions on gift cards during the holidays or you can buy them online at a percentage off by shopping at PlasticJungle.com or GiftCardRescue.com.

Come back tomorrow and we’ll talk nixing holiday stress with the “b” word.

Homemaking Unplugged

Hey everyone!

By now I’m sure you know that I’m no longer blogging at Simple Saving Savvy. I’ve moved on to greater, more focused adventures.

Many of you have moved with me over to Homemaking Unplugged and I am so blessed by and grateful for your loyalty.

I have noticed, however, that I still have 1300 email subscribers for Simple Saving Savvy. Unfortunately, since I’m no longer updating this blog, you’re getting nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zero.

Oh, except for a few coupon updates which will end very soon.

I would feel so honored if you would sign up to get email updates from Homemaking Unplugged.

I’m still sharing recipes, coupons, my shopping lists and much more!

Goodbye Simple Saving Savvy – Hello Homemaking Unplugged!!

Gulp!

After one and a half months of the craziest summer of my life so far, I feel like I can finally come up for air. Whew! Has it been busy!

Along with the busy, there’s been alot of soul searching and just getting real with myself and God.

Out of this has come a very hard decision, and it is with a sentimental, yet excited heart that I write this post.

After much thought and advise from wise friends, I have decided that the best way to go about this change is to re-brand entirely. So, my friends, effective immediately, I will no longer be updating Simple Saving Savvy.

Instead, Maria and I are creating a brand new blog called: Homemaking Unplugged.

I’ll be blogging about my personal journey in homemaking. I’ll still be sharing deals and money saving strategy but it will be more about what I’m doing for my family and in my home and less about scoring the next sweet deal.

It’s still under construction and pretty simplistic, but I’m getting back to blogging at the new site so be sure to check it out.

There are those of you who have been with me since the beginning, and to you I am forever grateful! I hope you’ll visit the new digs.

Delivery Man Starring Vince Vaughn

What is family?

These days, this question may seem tough to answer. Over the past couple decades, families have taken on a whole different dynamic. We  now not only have nuclear families, but also step-families, blended families, single-parent families, adoptive families and foster families. And this  just scratches the surface.

A new Dreamworks film takes the most unconventional look at “family” that I’ve ever seen, but it looks like it will be heartwarming and funny. And if you like Vince Vaughn as much as I do, well, he’s  that’s just icing on the cake.

Delivery Man, starring Vince Vaughn, Cobie Smulders and Chris Pratt will debut in theaters November 22, 2013.

In the film, Vince Vaughn plays an affable underachiever looking for his purpose in life, when he finds out he’s fathered 533 children through anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years ago. Now he must decide whether or not to come forward when 142 of them want to meet their biological father.

The film is rated PG-13 for mature themes.

Soft Scrub Advanced Surface Giveaway

Soft Scrub Advanced Surface Giveaway
Have you tried NEW Soft Scrub Advanced Surface? It’s a new member of the Soft Scrub family that you can use on your solid surfaces including granite and stainless steel.

I recently tried it and I loved it for cleaning my quartz countertops. It removed grease and grime and leaved the surface residue-free. I wasn’t as excited about the results on stainless steel but it still did a decent job.

This week, SSS readers can enter to win a FREE Soft Scrub product of their choice. Just enter your info in the PromoSimple widget below.
