How You Can Help Tornado Victims

Heads up Savvy Savers! Let’s all band together in prayer and generosity in the face of such mass destruction.

We don’t fully understand all this, but we don’t have to. We just have to trust in Sovereign God to show the way through all this. That same God calls us to have compassion. That doesn’t just mean to show pity or empathy. Compassion means seeing a need and taking action.

Family after family has lost everything due to tornadoes during the past couple of days. Right now they are in dire need of the most basic necessities, so purge those stockpiles and pantries and generously give out of the abundance with which you’ve been blessed.

I’m sure there are lots of organizations rallying across the state to help those who lost so much, but here are a few immediate options for you to consider:

UPDATE 5/22/13: As more and more local organizations and groups rally to the aid of fellow Oklahomans, this list keeps growing.

♥Sequoyah Middle School – Danforth & Bryant (next to Kickingbird Cinema & Braums)in Edmond. Accepting donations Tuesday & Wednesday, May 20-21.

♥All Edmond High Schools are accepting donations. North is collecting water, Santa Fe is collecting canned goods and Memorial is collecting clothes. Thanks Coupon Closet for specifics.

♥KFOR-TV – 444 East Britton Rd., OKC
Salvation Army truck taking donations at starting Tuesday at 10am.

♥News 9 Studios – 7401 N. Kelley Avenue, Oklahoma City

♥Longhorn Steakhouse – Penn & Memorial – Delivering to Moore on Thursday

♥Fusion Fitness – 323 W Main, Norman. Donations for Red Cross accepted starting 9am on Tuesday.

♥Grandad’s Bar – 317 NW 23rd St, Oklahoma City, OK 73103. Accepting clothes, storage supplies, tools, dog/cat food, toiletries, & non-perishables.

♥Tulsa Adkar Shrine Center – 2808 S Sheridan Road – Holding a collection drive Friday, 5/24 from 11am to 7pm. Accepting donations for clothing, diapers & baby wipes, baby food, formula, non-perishable food items, water, blankets, pillows, toiletries. Contact (918) 269-9091

♥Jenks Fire Department – Station 1 – They have already taken two truckloads of donations to Moore but will make as many trips as needed.

♥Science Museum Oklahoma – Accepting donations of supplies. No clothing please. Tuesday-Friday-Fri from 9am-6pm and Saturday-Sunday from 11am-6pm.

♥Infant Crisis Center – 4224 N. Lincoln Blvd, Oklahoma City, OK 73105 – Accepting diapers & wipes, baby formula, baby food, etc.

♥Edmond First Baptist – 33rd & Bryant

♥Journey Church -I-35 and Tecumseh Road – Check here for a full list of needed items. No clothing please!!! They also have volunteer shifts available.

♥New U Nutrition – 1337 E State Highway 152, Mustang, OK. Donate items for first responders (water, protein bars, nuts, beef jerky, Gatorade, hand sanitizer, etc). They will be leaving at 4pm Tuesday to deliver items to Moore.

♥Memorial Road Church of Christ – Edmond – They have a Disaster Relief Team at work. Check out their website for detailed info about how you can help: donations, monetary gifts, volunteering, etc.

♥Yukon High School – The Yukon high School StuCo and Leadership will be collecting the items on the list below and delivering them to the Salvation Army for distribution. Please bring items to the Yukon High School Rotunda by Wednesday, 5/23 at 3:30pm.

♥Uptown Grocery Co. – Kelly & Covell, Edmond – Accepting donations of the items listed below through Friday. All items will be coordinated locally through the Red Cross.

The following items are needed:

  • Bottled water
  • Gatorade
  • Wipes
  • Diapers
  • Baby formula
  • Hand towels
  • Individually wrapped snacks
  • Work gloves
  • Toiletries
  • Batteries
  • Sunscreen
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Plastic Totes
  • Small to Medium Size Moving Boxes (uniform in size.)
  • Cleaning Supplies
  • Micro-USB Phone Chargers
  • Insect Repellent
  • Pillows and blankets
  • Ziploc Bags
  • Any other practical donations

Please do not bring clothing unless specifically stated.

Financial donations are encouraged as this allows the funds to be poured into immediate, specific needs and also utilized for future rebuilding efforts. Before donating by text, please read this article. If you’re wanting your monetary gift to go to Oklahoma, it might be better to donate directly to an organizations local chapter.

♥Evoke – 103 S Broadway, Edmond – All CASH sales for Tuesday, 5/22 will be donated to Oklahoma Red Cross.
♥Homeland – Choose to donate to the Red Cross when you pay for your groceries.

♥Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity – from their facebook page: ” [We] will assist the victims of the May 19th and 20th, 2013 tornadoes. This will be an extremely large endeavor that will take some time, but we are comfortable in saying that our goal is for everyone to have a place to call Home! Remember, right now items are needed for rescue workers and displaced families. They are in the recovery and clean up stages. Donate items they can use NOW! There will be plenty of opportunities later to donate items to help them set up homes.
